Nintendo shows off Miiverse, Wii U Pro Controller during pre-E3 presentation

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave a brief pre-E3 presentation Sunday focusing on the Wii U, Nintendo's new home console expected to be released this holiday season.

Nintendo has been criticized for years about their online efforts not matching up to Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live. Better late than never, Iwata gave details on Miiverse, which will be available on the Wii U, 3DS and PC and mobile devices. Gamers will be able to see who's online, what their friends are playing and communicate with them. They can share messages during gameplay and send hand-written notes to one another.

Some tweaks were made to the Wii U Gamepad, the main controller for the Wii U console. The big one was instead of circle pads on the original prototype last year, it will feature clickable sticks on both sides.

One shocker was the Wii U Pro Controller reveal, which looks to be another option to play games. The similarities to the Xbox 360 controller are obviously there, but this should please the traditionalists.

No games were revealed, but why would Nintendo do that now? They still got the Tuesday press conference to focus on lots of games. We saw looks of a New Super Mario Bros game that was shown off last year, so if that becomes a launch title this holiday, expect a lot of Wii U sellouts.

Can't wait for Tuesday.
