Pavel Datsyuk beaten in NHL 13 cover tournament
Well, that was a disappointment. I was all ready to type up another piece on how Pavel Datsyuk moved on in the NHL 13 cover tournament when I had to do a double take.
There was New York Islanders' John Tavares in the spot Datsyuk should be. Ridiculous! He should be battling Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators! Wait a second. Rinne? How did Rinne beat Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers? Pretty sure Rinne and the Preds got exposed real bad against the Phoenix Coyotes.
The left side of the bracket looks normal, with a classic Philadelphia and Pittsburgh match-up between Claude Giroux of the Flyers and Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins. But the right side looks like something out of the Twilight Zone.
What it came down to was who wanted it more, and the Red Wings fan base didn't care as much the Islanders fans. The New Yorkers were campaigning their butts off for Tavares and it paid off. And since you can vote as much as you want, they probably spent all week clicking on their man. I guess Detroit fans didn't have any energy left after the Madden tournament.
I'm not going to lie, I thought Datsyuk was a shoe-in for this. Calvin Johnson got the Madden 13 cover, and Detroit fans still voted for him despite the whole curse nonsense. Plus, it would have been cool to see No. 13 on the NHL 13 cover.
